History

This brief history merely highlights a few of the key dates and events in Oakwood's 62-year history. Hundreds of individuals and thousands of supporters helped build Oakwood into the outstanding organization it is today. 1948

Oakwood Lutheran Homes Association receives its corporate charter

1961, 1968

Hebron Hall is renovated, additions are completed

1976

Dedication of the Oakwood Village Apartments, consisting of the Tower, Gallery, Oakwood Auditorium and Village Inn Dining Room

1978

Oakwood sells 10 acres of land to satisfy debt payments stemming from the slow occupancy of the Oakwood Village Apartments

1981

The Oakwood Foundation is established "to receive, administer and allocate gifts and grants made on behalf of the nursing home and retirement apartments"

1983

A west wing is added to Hebron Oaks

1986

The Oakwood Foundation establishes the Continuing Care Endowment Fund

1988

Oakwood is accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission

1989

The Resurrection Chapel and a final addition to Hebron Oaks are completed

1992  

Tabor Oaks opens at Oakwood Village West

1995

An on-site University of Wisconsin-Madison geriatric clinic opens at Oakwood Village West

1998

Oakwood Village celebrates its fiftieth year of service

1999

Oakwood Village West celebrates opening of Covenant Oaks memory care assisted living

2000

Oakwood Village East celebrates the opening of its first building, Pioneer Prairie

2001

Oakwood Village East celebrates the opening of Settlers Ridge, Oakwood Seasons, Oakwood Knoll and the Tree of Life Chapel

2002  

Oakwood Village West completes construction of The Oaks

2006

Oakwood Seasons is converted from a 40-bed assisted living program to a 20-bed assisted living program and Oakwood Meadows, an assisted living program serving seniors with heavy custodial needs is created 

2006

Oakwood Village West celebrates the opening of Heritage Oaks

2008

Oakwood Village East Health and Rehabilitation Center opens.  The 42-bed  skilled nursing facility completes the continuum of care on the Oakwood Village East campus

Oakwood's Beginnings

Person's Name
In its beginning, Oakwood Village West consisted of two buildings and six cottages erected as a rest home in 1928. All of the buildings have since been taken down, with the last two cottages removed in 2005 to make way for the construction of Heritage Oaks.
