Health & Wellness

Health & Wellness

At Oakwood Village, our focus is on the health and wellness of older adults.  Oakwood’s programming emphasizes person-centered, successful aging.  A wide variety of activities and programs are offered to assist residents to remain healthy and attain or maintain their highest level of wellbeing. Walking groups, classes focused on fall prevention, increased flexibility and balance, as well as informational presentations are just a few of the ways in which Oakwood Village promotes health and wellness to our residents.

In addition to our general emphasis on health and wellness, Oakwood Village offers two unique programs designed by our staff to promote proactive and healthy aging.  These programs are designed for individuals who want to take a proactive approach to aging, and are intended to identify, address and prevent potential concerns from occurring.

Oakwood’s Active Care program is a health and wellness program available to residents which emphasizes exercise and physical fitness, nutrition, bone health, balance and fall prevention as a means of maintaining your independence.

Oakwood’s Enriched Care program takes a more personalized approach to healthy aging.  An interdisciplinary team of Oakwood staff, led by a geriatrician, assess your current health status, identifying the key health risks most likely to lead to a potential decline in health.  Staff works with you to create a personal health plan, intended to promote healthy aging and minimize the potential of hospitalization and nursing home placement.

Oakwood Village also prides itself on its emphasis on life-long learning. We frequently partner with local institutions such as Edgewood College, Madison Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin – Madison to create intergenerational learning opportunities, benefiting residents as well as students and instructors.  Oakwood Village hosts students and instructors from these schools for lectures, classes and other learning experiences.

Health & Wellness Philosophy

As Christian continuum of care communities, we believe life is a gift from God. Every person is of infinite worth and should be enabled and assisted to attain or maintain their highest level of well being.  Oakwood will respect the religious beliefs and personal values of each individual and will nurture and celebrate cultural differences.

Every resident has the right to make their own choices regarding their health care; however, the Oakwood community has the right to expect residents to be responsible to the communities by utilizing the Oakwood continuum of care. Oakwood provides support and professional guidance to assist individual residents and the community in this task.

At all times the residents and their appointed representatives will be fully informed on the status of the resident's health through open communication between these persons and the health care team. The necessary support and education concerning the use or non use of medical treatment will be provided to individuals and families. Residents will be encouraged to complete advanced directives. At the end of life, special care will be taken to meet the needs of residents and their families.

Oakwood is committed to providing a highly trained and qualified health care team. Oakwood constantly strives to improve the services it offers.
