Active Care
Active Care is an individualized wellness program focused on proper fitness, nutrition and maintaining the personal health of older adults. Participants enroll in an eight-week course, meeting in the fitness room on the Oakwood campus twice-weekly.
As a part of the program, participants go through an individualized screening process meant to identify nutritional deficiencies, unnecessary medication use, fall risks, and a review of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Their fitness and nutritional recommendations are then intended to target specific needs.
An Oakwood Village staff member, certified as a personal trainer, spends time each week orienting participants to fitness and resistance training equipment and answering questions. Classes utilize the equipment in group sessions two times per week, and participants are also encouraged to continue a customized routine, created with the support of the personal trainer, individually throughout the week.
Following one of the group workout sessions, a speaker series is provided to participants. An expert, either from the Oakwood staff or from the community, leads a valuable discussion on such topics as fall prevention, memory health, the role of nutrition on bone health, non-medication alternatives to managing chronic conditions, home exercise techniques and pain management.
Through the SAIL Program older adults in the community, in addition to Oakwood residents, are offered the opportunity to participate in Active Care.
