Frequently Asked Questions about Independent Living

Can I bring my pets?

Pets are welcome at the discretion of the campus director. We ask that they be "below-the-knee" and under 20 pounds.

Is parking included with an apartment?

One underground heated parking space is included with each life lease home. Additional parking is available on the surface lots outside of each apartment building.

What is a life lease?

A life lease agreement is a form of a right-of-occupancy contract. The cost of a lease is a one-time entrance fee and an ongoing monthly service fee. Oakwood's life lease agreement specifies that 90% of the original apartment home price will be returned to the resident or their estate when they move out of Oakwood and their apartment home has been re-leased.

Do you have rentals?

The Prairie Ridge campus on Madison's east side does not offer a rental product. Our apartment homes are offered as a life lease.

Do you have a long waiting list?

There is a waiting list for independent living at Prairie Ridge, but we usually have a few apartment homes immediately available. The waiting list consists of people waiting for a certain style or location of apartment home, or people planning for a move in the future.

What age is the right age to move in?

Oakwood Village is a 55+ community. We have a wide age range of residents in our apartment homes, but we encourage residents to move in while they're active and able to take advantage of the many amenities and opportunities that are offered.

Do I need to be Lutheran to live at Oakwood?

Oakwood is a Lutheran-based community, but residents do not need to be of the Lutheran faith, or any faith to live here. We are Lutheran at our roots and inclusive in our nature. Our Mission Statement, Vision and Values are consistent with the Lutheran church, and our sponsoring congregations elect our parent board members and guide our operational philosophies, which include serving a diverse population of older adults.

Is transportation provided?

We provide transportation to all off-campus Life Enrichment activities, as well as scheduled transportation to area shopping centers three times a week.

Are meals included?

There is a dining credit included as part of the monthly service fee. This is a declining-balance credit that can be used in our campus restaurant, The Prairie Rose Inn, which is open 8:00am - 6:30pm seven days a week. Take-out and delivery are also available.

I see that Oakwood is a non-profit. What does that mean?

Oakwood is governed by a local Board of Directors and sponsored by 37 Lutheran churches. No person or entity "owns" Oakwood. Any revenue we are able to generate from operations gets reinvested into our community to improve our programming, facilities and to hire and retain quality staff, not distributed to shareholders.

Will I have additional storage?

Each apartment home comes with two additional storage units. One is on the same floor as the apartment home, and the other is in the parking garage level, and they measure approximately four feet by six feet.
