Additional Support Options
Appreciated Stock: When you make a gift of appreciated stock, you receive a charitable deduction equal to the full fair market value of the securities and pay no capital gains tax on your gift. To support the Oakwood Foundation using appreciated stock, instruct your firm in writing to deliver the desired securities to RBC Wealth Management, DTC# 0235, with further credit to Oakwood Foundation, account #30664709. Unless you wish to remain anonymous, please request that your firm include the donor’s information (your name) with the transfer.
Bequest: One of the easiest ways to leave a legacy is by including the Oakwood Foundation in your will or living trust. Please ask your estate planner to include the following language: “I/we hereby give, devise, bequeath to the Oakwood Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit, non-stock Wisconsin corporation with its principal office in Madison, Wisconsin” followed by either a) a specific gift amount or b) percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust to benefit the Oakwood Foundation.
Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA): When you set up a CGA, you make a gift of cash or stock to the Oakwood Foundation and in return you receive dependable, fixed income for life. A qualified charitable gift annuity is not insurance under the laws of this state and is not subject to regulation by the commissioner of insurance of Wisconsin or protected by an insurance guaranty fund or an insurance guaranty association.
Gift of Insurance: If you own a life insurance policy that you no longer need, you can support our mission by naming the “Oakwood Foundation, Inc.” as the beneficiary on your policy. A paid-up policy produces a charitable deduction in the amount of the policy’s cash surrender value or basis, whichever is less.
IRA and Retirement Plan: You may also make a gift through your IRA, 401(k) or other qualified retirement plan. Simply designate the Oakwood Foundation to receive all or a portion of the balance of your plan through your plan’s administrator. This allows you to avoid exposure to income and estate tax that you might face if you designate this to your heirs, and you can continue to take regular lifetime withdrawals.
Gift a Portion of Your Life Lease Refund: Oakwood residents living in Life Lease apartment homes receive a 90% refund of their entrance fee when their apartment home is re-leased and they leave the Oakwood Community. Residents have the opportunity to designate their life lease refund to beneficiaries or a trust upon death. Leaving a portion of your 90% refund to the Oakwood Foundation can be done without impacting already-established estate plans.
The Oakwood Foundation
Established in 1981, the Oakwood Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit public charity, and serves as the official fundraising and gift-receiving organization for Oakwood Lutheran Senior Ministries (EIN 39-1398037).
The focus of the Oakwood Foundation is supporting Oakwood’s two campuses, those we serve, and those who provide service. Your gifts benefit Oakwood residents, enhancing their lives in ways that would not have otherwise been possible through Oakwood’s operating budget. We invite you to identify an aspect of the Oakwood community you are passionate about supporting, or make a gift towards an area of focus:
- Improve the lives of Oakwood residents, employees, visitors and volunteers by supporting our Campus Redevelopment Efforts. The enhancements you make possible on our two campuses will impact the Oakwood community for decades.
- Support Staff Training, Retention and Recognition Efforts. People define Oakwood’s success and our ability to serve with compassion. Help provide access to additional resources to help Oakwood invest in people.
- Give to the Oakwood Mission Support Fund and provide Oakwood with the financial strength and flexibility to support the organization in ways that meet the greatest need.
- Contribute to the Continuing Care Endowment Fund, which helps support Oakwood’s efforts to provide care and services to residents who have outlived their resources through no fault of their own.
Why Gifts Matter
As a faith-based not-for-profit retirement community, resident fees go towards covering the cost of ongoing operations. Gifts to the Oakwood Foundation allow our organization to provide a “margin of excellence” we would not otherwise be able to fund through resident fees.
Whether its providing additional staff training to enhance the skills and knowledge base of our workforce, pursuing compelling new technology or programs in order to improve the delivery of care and services to older adults, or enhancing a community space on one of our campuses, your gifts make a difference at Oakwood each and every day.

The Oakwood Foundation manages a number of funds focused on specific aspects of the Oakwood ministry and mission. A few of our most popular funds are listed below. If you would like your gift to impact a particular area of the Oakwood community, we would welcome the opportunity to help you achieve your vision.
Oakwood Mission Support Fund
Gifts to the Oakwood Mission Support Fund go towards meeting Oakwood’s greatest needs.
Continuing Care Endowment Fund
Gifts to the Continuing Care Endowment Fund are used to support the operations of Oakwood Lutheran Senior Ministries in their efforts to continue to serve older adults who have outlived their resources through no fault of their own and are unable to pay the full cost of their care.
Employee Appreciation Fund
Gifts to the Employee Appreciation Fund are distributed to Oakwood employees annually in the form of a holiday cash gift. Oakwood employees are not allowed to accept tips or gifts directly, so a gift to the Employee Appreciation Fund lets our employees know their work is appreciated.
Gifts from donors like you provide funding for important projects on both Oakwood campuses annually.
Examples of recent donor accomplishments include:
- The installation of a hearing loop, new screen, projector, sound system and seating in the popular Center for Arts and Education at University Woods
- Additional staff training and education, including customer service training, leadership training, and the creation of a valuable Mentor Program for Certified Nursing Assistants and Resident Assistants
- Cycling without Age bicycles on both campuses, allowing residents who have lost the ability to bike the opportunity to “feel the wind in their hair”
- $500,000 from the Continuing Care Endowment Fund in 2018, allowing Oakwood to provide care and services to approximately 60 people each day who do not have the resources to pay for care at Oakwood or have run out of funds through no fault of their own
We thank you for your continued support.
Thank You Partners
Oakwood would like to thank the following businesses for choosing to be an Oakwood Community Partner in 2018. Their generous support helps improve programs and services at Oakwood.
"The Foundation makes life better"
"Received needed support"
"Faith-based community experience"
“We first learned about Oakwood fifty-five years ago after moving to Madison and joining one of the thirty seven Lutheran churches which helped to establish Oakwood. Eleven years later, we bought bonds to help Oakwood build the Tower Apartments. In 2002 The Oaks opened. Some of our friends who had moved there were so satisfied with everything Oakwood had to offer – the Village Store, on-campus clinic, Oakwood Pharmacy, library, gift shop, beauty salons, activity programming for all interest, and a friendly, competent staff - that it motivated us to take a closer look. Numerous high recommendations convinced us to move to Heritage Oaks when it opened in 2006. We couldn’t be happier or more satisfied with our decision. Our lifestyle at Oakwood is exactly what we wanted. The place we became acquainted with over fifty years ago and have supported through the years is now our home. That’s why we give to the Oakwood Mission Support Fund each year. The gifts are used where needed most – whether it’s to improve life enrichment programming in memory care or provide the funds to create new spaces residents can enjoy. We believe giving to the Foundation makes life better on each Oakwood campus for all residents and makes a difference for older adults in the community, too. ”
“The last years of one’s life should be as comfortable and free from stress and anxiety as possible. This is why I chose to live at Oakwood Village,” shares Ruth. “During the last years of my husband Fred’s life, he needed special care. Oakwood had the facilities and staff to care for him.” “I received needed support while living at Oakwood which eased my physical and emotional stress while Fred was ill.” “This is why I support the Oakwood Foundation and Oakwood Village - in memory of my husband Fred and to preserve the mission and ministry of Oakwood. ”
“We made the decision while working to create a charitable fund with some of our pension to support faith-based organizations we want to see continue after we’re gone,” shares Ron. For Ron and Carol, supporting Oakwood’s vibrant and secure community makes sense. “After living in our apartment for almost 15 years we continue to be satisfied with our decision to be part of a community of people who aren’t just aging in place, but continue to be active in serving others.” Making a legacy gift to the Oakwood Foundation is our way of helping to underwrite growing costs to provide this faith-based community experience for others in the future. ”
